Q: What are Limb Loss and Limb Differences?
A: Limb loss generally refers to the absence of any part of an extremity (arm, hand or leg) due to surgical or traumatic amputation. The term, Limb Differences, is used in reference to the congenital absence or malformation of limbs.

Q: What causes Limb Loss and Limb Differences?
A: In the past, many cases of Limb Difference were attributed to the use of drugs, such as thalidomide by the mother during pregnancy. Causes of congenital Limb Differences are frequently unknown. Limb loss can occur due to traumatic trauma such as accident, infection, diabetes, war, cancer, vascular disease and other diseases.

Q: How can one reduce risks of amputation, or limb lost?
A: If, you are diabetic remember to practice good foot hygiene and care. If you smoke, quit or don't start at all. When operating machinery such as lawnmowers etc., practice good safety habits. If your pregnant or think your pregnant, protect your unborn child by taking medications only when absolutely necessary and under your doctor's supervision. This will help reduce the risk of limb deficiencies in your newborn.

Q: Will I have discomfort wearing my artificial limb?
A: Friction cased by movement while wearing an artificial limb can case chaffing, and discomfort. Please inform your rehabilitation consultant, they will be able to make the necessary adjustments to your artificial limb. One thing you need to remember is that your body was not designed to wear an artificial limb and the additional weight, movement restrictions and rubbing will feel unusual.

Q: Even though your limb is no longer there, is it common to continue to have feelings?
A: This is called phantom sensation and is common among many amputees. If it feels uncomfortable, it's called phantom pain. Many amputees experiencing this discomfort ceases shortly after amputation. There are others that experience phantom pain for a number of years. Some have turned to treatments such as medications, exercise, heat or cold applications and acupuncture. Consult your physician for the best treatment for you.

Q: Does limb loss increase risks for other health problems?
A: Limb Loss more often is the result not the cause of other health problems. Continual limb and phantom pain, along with skin problems associated with prosthesis usually are common. Since the loss of a limb may result in decreased activity, the risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle may be increased.

Q: What involves caring for people with missing Limbs and Limb Differences?
A: This will depend greatly upon his or her total health and strength. Physical/occupational therapy or training may be needed to help you successfully use your prostheses, along with other devices to help you regain independence. Being a new amputee you may also need professional assistance with emotional adjustment to limb loss. For an amputee whose health does not permit the use of prosthesis assistance, mobility and transfers may be required. Generally this means to move your body from one location to another, such as transferring from your wheelchair to your bed. If you are a candidate suitable for a prosthesis several visits to the limb centre may be required to obtain a proper fitting.
